Hello GCAO members,
With the arrival of spring, activity is picking up across the industry. Wishing you and your teams a safe and productive season.
Recent News and GCAO Activities
- In case you did not attend, our AGM was very successful with 30 attendees. We were addressed by incoming OCA Executive director Bill Ferriera and retiring OCA GM, John DeVries. Your new President is Daniel Carley of Dolyn Construction.
- The 2026 GCAO Cocktail Party (again sponsored by Petrela Winter & Trisura) was a tremendous success, bringing together 88 guests and members for an evening of drinks, snacks, live music, and exceptional networking opportunities.
- Stop by and see our booth at the 2026 OCA Symposium and Trade Show on April 22, 2026.
- The Annual GCAO Fall Golf Tournament is scheduled for September 2, 2026. Keep an eye on the website for registration.
Tendering Practices
Our tender practices team has been busy on your behalf on the following issues:
- Our letter to Wigwamen ( see website ) was successful in changing their tender to allow for additional information to be submitted 24 hours after closing
- We authored a joint letter with the OCA to the Minister of Labour David Piccini MPP, arguing against changes to the Employment Standards Act (2000) which would make us responsible for unpaid subcontract workers' wages. ( see website )
- We were able to persuade the City to remove the COR requirement on their Bob McQuarrie Rink Slab replacement tender
- Our City Liaison Team met with the City on March 24th and confirmed that the COR requirement will not drop to $1M anytime soon and the limit might be changed to a higher number. The City will still make exceptions for projects they believe will have safety challenges. The next City Liaison meeting is scheduled for June 25th
- "Buy Ontario" is still in the pipeline. The City expects new regulations soon.
